[19.08.2008] Last week of summer holidays will be very busy for COP 14 delegates. On the 21st of August the last session of the Ad Hoc Working Meetings preceding COP 14 will be held in the capital city of Ghana – Accra Climate Change Talks 2008.Planned for 21-27 August session will be opened by the President of Ghana, Mr. John Kufuor. The Accra Climate Change Talks will take forward work on a strengthened and effective international climate change deal under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and also prepare delegates for the negotiations during COP 14. Looking at Accra meeting from the perspective of COP 14, this event is very important. More than 1000 delegates will have a chance to know the state of Polish preparation to the COP 14 - the information will be presented during the Bureau of the Convention session and a briefing planned on 22 August. Polish representatives will be headed by Mr. Janusz Zaleski, Undersecretary of State together with Ms. Małgorzata Snarska, Head of the COP 14 Polish team. Mr. Tomasz Kayser, the president of Poznań city, will outline the attractions and the main facilities prepared by the city. Polish ambassador of Climate, Mr. Janusz Reiter will also be present in Accra. Parallel bilateral talks will be held between countries’ representatives and delegates for COP 14. The Meeting in Accra will have unusual character because exceptionally the dress code for participants at the upcoming conference is to be adapted to take into account the tropical weather in Ghana. The UNFCCC Secretariat hopes that amending the dress code will allow participants to conduct discussions in a more comfortable environment, as well as limit the use of air conditioning and thereby reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The Working Meetings before COP, each time are held in different parts of the Word, which guarantees equal access to all participants of the negotiations. This time Ghana was chosen as the location for the third session of the Ad Hoc Working Meetings - a country in West Africa. Ghana is hosting the UN Climate Convention meeting for the first time. The meeting will be held at the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC), Castle Road, Accra.
During Accra Climate Change Talks 2008 two working groups will be negotiating: the Ad Hoc Working Group on Long-term Cooperative Action under the Convention (AWG-LCA 3) and the Ad Hoc Working Group on Further Commitments for Annex I Parties under the Kyoto Protocol (AWG-KP 6).
